What is Midsommar?
Midsommar is Sweden’s biggest summer celebration — for many Swedes it’s bigger than Christmas. It’s celebrated on Midsummer’s Eve (Midsommarafton), the Friday between June 19 and June 25, around the summer solstice. In 2026 that’s Friday, June 19.
- Maypole (midsommarstången) — A leaf-and-flower-wrapped pole raised around 1–2 PM. The raising is the central moment of the day.
- Ring dances — Families hold hands and dance around the pole. "Små grodorna" (the little frogs) is the song every Swedish child knows.
- Flower crowns (blomsterkrans) — Kids (and adults) wear crowns made from wildflowers picked that morning.
- Traditional food — Pickled herring, new potatoes, sour cream, chives and the first strawberries of the season.
- Mostly free — Local celebrations in parks and heritage centres are free; Skansen and major events charge entry.
- A heads-up for visitors — Most shops, museums and restaurants close early or entirely on Midsommarafton. Public transport runs on a holiday schedule. Plan ahead.
If you’re in Stockholm on June 19, don’t miss it — this is Sweden at its most Swedish.

Tips for Midsommar with Kids
Make a flower crown in the morning
Pick wildflowers with the kids and tie crowns before heading out. Many venues run on-site workshops too — arrive early if you want to join.
Arrive for the maypole raising
The highlight is when the maypole goes up, usually 1–3 PM. Come 30 minutes early for a good spot. Ring dances follow — "Små grodorna" is non-negotiable.
Pack a picnic
Herring, new potatoes and strawberries are traditional. Shops close early on Midsommarafton — buy supplies the day before.
