Summer Tips for Families
What to pack
Sunscreen (the sun is strong in June–July), layers for cooler evenings, a rain jacket (summer showers are common), swimwear, and comfortable walking shoes. A picnic blanket is essential — Stockholm has amazing picnic spots.
Best months to visit
June through August. Mid-June to mid-July has the longest days (almost 19 hours of daylight!). July is warmest but also when many Swedes are on vacation, so the city can feel quieter. August is great for warm weather with fewer tourists.
Getting to the archipelago
Waxholmsbolaget ferries depart from Strömkajen (near the Grand Hotel). Vaxholm is the easiest day trip — 1 hour each way, with a charming town, fortress, and ice cream shops. Buy tickets on the boat or via the app. Kids under 6 travel free.
Eating outdoors
Stockholm has a great outdoor dining culture in summer. Most restaurants set up terraces (uteservering). For budget meals, pack a picnic from any supermarket — Tanto, Vitabergsparken, and Hagaparken are the best picnic parks. Many parks also have free BBQ grills (bring your own charcoal).
Midsommar
If you’re visiting around June 20–22, you’ll experience Sweden’s most important holiday. Skansen hosts the biggest public celebration in Stockholm — maypole dancing, flower wreaths, and traditional food. Book accommodation early as it’s a popular weekend.
