Tips for Kids' Races

Arrive early for registration

Arrive 30–45 minutes before the start to register, pick up race bibs, and warm up. Popular races can have long queues at registration.

Comfortable shoes — not new ones

Let kids run in shoes they’re already used to. New shoes can cause blisters. Regular trainers work great for most kids’ races.

Bring water and a snack

Children need to drink before and after the race. A banana or energy bar is the perfect post-finish snack. Most events have a water station at the finish line.

Stay and cheer

Kids want an audience! Stand along the course and cheer — it makes the whole experience more fun. Take photos at the finish line — a great memory regardless of placement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a barnlopp (kids’ race)?

A barnlopp is a short running race for children, typically between 200 metres and 2 km. They’re organised by local athletics clubs, municipalities or event companies and are open to all children regardless of experience. The focus is on fun and movement, not competition.

What age are kids’ races for?

Most kids’ races have classes starting from age 3–4 and up. Distances are adapted by age — the youngest typically run 200–400 metres, older children 800 metres to 2 km. Check each race for exact age classes.

Do you need to register in advance?

It varies. Some races require pre-registration while others have on-site sign-up. Check the details for each race — popular races may have limited spots.

Are kids’ races free?

Many kids’ races are free. Paid races typically cost 50–150 SEK and usually include a race bib and medal.

What should my child bring?

Comfortable running shoes (not new — break them in first!), light sportswear, a water bottle, and a piece of fruit or energy bar. Sun protection on sunny days. Most events have toilets and a water station at the finish.
